A retired maritime logistics crew reached out ahead of their annual reunion voyage, hoping for a shirt that honoured decades spent moving freight across the Pacific. They asked us to build the artwork around the NYK Line cargo vessels themselves — those deep navy hulls with cream superstructures cutting through open water — and to surround them with the tools of the trade: brass-toned compass roses, weathered anchors and a striped lighthouse standing watch over rocky islets. To soften the industrial edge, we layered in swaying palm groves, coral hibiscus blooms and drifting clouds across an aged sea-chart backdrop in muted sage and dusty teal. Hand-lettered notes like 'Smooth Sailing', 'Far & Wide' and 'Oceans Ahead' were tucked between the ships, reading like margin scribbles on an old navigator's map. The finished camp-collar shirt looks like something pulled from a shipping office drawer in 1958 — and that was exactly the point.
